How GPA is calculated

GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours. Each grade is worth a number of grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0 on the US 4.0 scale); multiply that by the course's credits to get its quality points, add every course, and divide by the credits attempted. A 3-credit A and a 4-credit B give (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43.

Because heavier classes pull harder on the average, a quick mental estimate is often wrong — a 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit elective. The calculator gets the credit-weighting exactly right. Studying without credit hours? Weighted vs unweighted GPA
