How to calculate a percentage

A percentage is just a part out of one hundred. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: part ÷ whole × 100. For example, 30 out of 200 is 30 ÷ 200 × 100 = 15%.

To take a percentage of a number you reverse that: write the percent as a decimal and multiply. 20% of 70 is 70 × 0.20 = 14, and 30% of 300 is 300 × 0.30 = 90. These two operations cover the vast majority of percentage problems you'll ever meet.

Percentage increase, decrease and change

Percentage change measures how much a value has grown or shrunk relative to where it started: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. A move from 200 to 250 is a 25% increase, while 250 back to 200 is a 20% decrease — the figures aren't mirror images because the starting point changes each way.

Don't confuse percentage change with percentage difference, which compares two numbers without treating either as the baseline: it divides the gap by their average. 40 and 60 differ by 40% (a 20-unit gap over an average of 50), even though 40 to 60 is a 50% increase. Reverse percentages and finding the whole

Sometimes you know the part and the percentage but need the original total — a reverse percentage. If 30 is 15% of a number, divide the part by the percentage as a decimal: 30 ÷ 0.15 = 200. This is the calculation you need to find a pre-tax price, a list price before a discount, or a target from a partial figure.

Adding or subtracting a percentage works the same way in reverse: a price of 200 with 15% added is 200 × 1.15 = 230, and the same price with 15% taken off is 200 × 0.85 = 170.

Every percentage problem is a variation of exactly one of three questions. Question 1: What is X% of Y? Multiply: Y × (X ÷ 100). These two phrases are routinely confused in news headlines, medical studies and financial disclosures, and the confusion is never trivial. Percentage points (pp) measure the raw arithmetic difference between two percentages. Percent change measures how large that shift is relative to the starting percentage.

Suppose a central bank raises its benchmark interest rate from 2% to 3%. The change is 1 percentage point — you can read that off directly. But the percentage change in the rate itself is (3 − 2) ÷ 2 × 100 = 50%. A borrower's mortgage cost goes up by 50% relative to what it was — not by 1%. Simple percentage growth applies the same rate to the original value each period. 10% simple growth on £1,000 adds £100 per year: after two years you have £1,200. Compound percentage growth applies the rate to the current value each period, so the base grows. 10% compound growth gives £1,000 × 1.10 = £1,100 after year one, then £1,100 × 1.10 = £1,210 after year two — a total gain of 21%, not 20%.

The compound growth formula is FV = PV × (1 + r)ⁿ, where PV is the present value, r is the rate as a decimal, and n is the number of periods. This formula underpins savings accounts, investment returns, and inflation calculations. A common mistake is to add annual percentage returns directly: two years of 10% and 15% growth is not 25% total — it is 1.10 × 1.15 = 1.265, a 26.5% total gain.

The same fact packaged differently produces very different gut reactions. A food labelled «95% fat-free» feels healthier than one labelled «5% fat», even though they are identical.
